Dr. Tenenbaum sought a career that made a real difference in patients' lives. She'd seen an otoplasty (ear surgery) on a 6-year-old girl who had been teased in kindergarten and knew that, for her, first grade would be different. With the encouragement of her mentor and chair, Susan Mackinnon, Dr. Tenenbaum decided to pursue plastic surgery. She was immediately attracted to the amount of skill and finesse that was required by surgeons executing delicate procedures, the variety of operations performed, and the problem-solving nature that was required for success. After extensive research of training programs across the country, Dr. Tenenbaum came to the conclusion that she would benefit the most from the program right where she was, at Washington University.

After three years of general surgery at Washington University, Dr. Tenenbaum completed a year of research with Dr. Alex Kane, chief of pediatric plastic and reconstructive surgery at Washington University, in his craniofacial imaging lab, taking Dr. Tenenbaum to Copenhagen, Denmark, for work with collaborators. During her plastic surgery training, she won awards for the best clinical presentation two consecutive years.

She says: "I believe that plastic surgery can be a life-altering event. Whether the culprit is an accident, cancer, or simply aging, pregnancy, or weight loss, plastic surgery can help patients feel 'whole' again. In addition, our specialty demands that we are skilled and highly trained surgeons who put patient safety first, and I am also extremely proud of that."
